Opening Growl

Well, here it is: my opening salvo into the blogosphere. I've had this Blogger account since 2006 – it was originally established so I could participate in my professional capacity in the now-defunct HSU ProCard blog – and it seems rather silly to have the account but no actual blog of my own. So, thanks to occasional gentle prompting from my friend Diane (as well as my own conscience), here we go.

As of this writing I'm not clear that I have all that much to say that people would be interested in reading, but … I'm going to give it a shot anyway. After all, you don't get anything accomplished without trying.

Some possible topics might be:

My job: I've been a buyer at Humboldt State University for quite some time now, and ... okay, it's not glamorous or anything, but it's obviously a huge part of my life and it allows me to live and do the things that matter to me.

Sports: I like football to some extent, but I don't pay as much attention as I used to before the 49ers started stinking up the gridiron. My main thing is women's basketball, particularly my beloved Stanford Cardinal. I've been a fan since Coach Tara VanDerveer and the Jennifer Azzi-led Cardinal earned their first NCAA Championship in 1989-90, and I'm not going anywhere. The new season is about to begin, so I'll most likely have a thing or two to say about what's going on.

Politics: I have a definite liberal point of view, but I'm equal opportunity: I tend to be disgusted no matter who's in power. That's the nature of the beast, is it not? I'll probably keep the political stuff to a minimum – I don't have much stomach for it these days. I'm not really interested in getting attacked by every Beck-loving wanker with a teabag to wave and an axe to grind … maybe if there were some constructive point to it rather than just repeating the same old blather at the top of our lungs.

Art: I love the arts, both graphic and the written word. I'm afraid I suffer from a certain ADD with regards to my own production, but that's okay. Nobody's paying me, and I have no deadlines.

Entertainment: I love movies, I love TV, I love reading. Nuff sed ...

Signing off for now. I have a lot to learn.
